Marvis pitches it as a dessert and names the notes in that order, so the mint reads as a finish rather than the lead. In effect it is a chocolate toothpaste with cherry running through it. No chocolate, cherry or almond appears in the ingredient list; the notes come from the aroma blend.

The dessert stops at the flavour. Underneath is an ordinary working paste: calcium carbonate and hydrated silica to clean, sodium lauryl sulfate to foam, and xylitol and sodium saccharin for the sweetness the dessert notes need. It is a fluoride toothpaste by design. Sodium fluoride, listed among the ingredients, helps prevent tooth decay.

Marvis says its toothpastes are produced entirely in Italy, under Ludovico Martelli, the company that has owned the brand since 1997, and it describes the paste as old-style and concentrated. The tube carries the cameo of the Marquis on a chocolate-brown label patterned in red, under a crimson cap.

Black Forest suits anyone working through the less expected flavours in the Marvis toothpaste range; for sharp rather than sweet, Sweet & Sour Rhubarb is its 75ml counterpart.
