Our view

Strictly for people who buy black liquorice on purpose: bittersweet, darkly aromatic, with mint as the fresh finish. Liquorice sceptics should look to Aquatic Mint or Classic Strong Mint instead.

Pairs well with

Liquorice, softened by sweetness, finished with mint.

Bittersweet liquorice lifted by fresh mint: Marvis liquorice toothpaste, sold here as Licorice Mint, in a silver 85ml tube with a black label. The liquorice registers as soon as brushing starts, and the mint follows with freshness and a slight tingle.

Under the liquorice is a fluoride toothpaste, stocked for its flavour and formulated that way by Marvis. Sodium fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. In the mouth, the lather is sodium lauryl sulfate at work, and the sweetness that tempers the bitter edge comes from xylitol and sodium saccharin; the cleaning is left to calcium carbonate and hydrated silica. The liquorice is a flavour rather than an ingredient: the list declares anise alcohol and cinnamal among the aromatics and names no liquorice extract.

The tube is lettered Amarelli Licorice, after the liquorice house in Rossano, Calabria, that Italy's register of historic businesses records as a liquorice factory since 1731. Italy is also where Marvis says its toothpaste is made; the brand has been in Ludovico Martelli hands since 1997. Stock here is supplied by Berman Trading, the Australian distributor.

Choose it if liquorice is a pleasure rather than a dare. Anise Mint is the cooler star-anise relative, and Classic Strong Mint is the plain peppermint starting point of the Marvis range.

The Benefits.

  • Bittersweet Liquorice Flavour — liquorice from the first stroke of the brush, then mint freshness and a slight tingle, with sweetness balancing the darker, bitter side.
  • Flavour, Not Extract — no liquorice root extract appears in the ingredient list; declared aromatics such as anise alcohol and cinnamal build the liquorice character instead.
  • Fluoride Under the Flavour — sodium fluoride appears in the ingredient list, beneath all that liquorice. Sodium fluoride helps prevent tooth decay.
  • Calcium Carbonate and Silica — the two cleaning powders under the liquorice flavour; calcium carbonate, listed first, is also the largest single ingredient in the paste.
  • SLS For Lather — the lather comes from sodium lauryl sulfate, the long-standing foaming ingredient of mainstream toothpaste, which makes this the wrong tube for anyone steering clear of SLS.
  • Xylitol And Saccharin — the two sweeteners in the formula, and the sweet half of bittersweet, set against the darker aromatics of the liquorice flavour.
  • Full-Size 85ml Tube — silver, under a black label with white lettering and the Marquis portrait, and boxed in a silver carton that repeats the black panel.

How to use...

Put a pea-sized amount of paste on the brush, then brush for two minutes, morning and night, reaching every surface before spitting out the excess. The carton carries the directions and warnings that apply, including any age guidance for children; follow those first.

FAQ

▸ What does Marvis Licorice Mint taste like?
Liquorice leads, clearly and from the first moment, and mint comes in behind it with freshness and a light tingle. Marvis calls the balance bittersweet: the darker, slightly bitter side of liquorice set against the sweetness of xylitol and saccharin.

▸ Does Marvis liquorice toothpaste contain liquorice extract?
Not as a listed ingredient: the ingredient list names no liquorice root extract. The liquorice is a flavour, named on the tube after Amarelli, the Calabrian liquorice maker, and built from the aroma blend, which declares anise alcohol and cinnamal among its components.

▸ Does Marvis Licorice Mint contain fluoride?
Yes, like every Marvis toothpaste: the liquorice flavour sits on a sodium fluoride formula. Sodium fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. Toothpastes made without fluoride are a separate shelf here, gathered in the hydroxyapatite collection.

▸ Is Marvis Licorice Mint SLS-free?
No, and it does not set out to be. Sodium lauryl sulfate, eighth on the ingredient list, gives it the lather of a conventional paste. The SLS-free toothpaste collection on this site is the better starting point for anyone avoiding it.

▸ Licorice Mint or Anise Mint: which Marvis should I pick?
Both sit close to aniseed, but they differ. Anise Mint pairs spicy star anise with cool mint, while Licorice Mint is the darker, bittersweet one. If neither appeals, Classic Strong Mint is the plain peppermint choice in the range.

▸ What comes in the box, and how big is the tube?
One full-size 85ml Marvis tube in a silver carton with a black panel. Inside, the tube repeats the look: silver body, black label, white lettering and the small portrait Marvis refers to as its Marquis.
