Boka has rebuilt its Ela Mint floss. The strand is now woven from more than 550 fine fibres that spread apart when they meet saliva, so the floss flattens out and wraps around the shape of each tooth instead of staying a thin, round thread.

A coating of Cera Alba, a white beeswax, gives it an easy glide into tight spaces, and the fibres themselves are mint-infused for a fresh Ela Mint finish. Each pack holds 27 yards (24.7 metres) in a compact, translucent green dispenser with a built-in cutter, so you can see at a glance when it is time for a new one.

One thing to know before you buy: because the coating is beeswax, this floss is not suitable for vegans.

How to use...

Pull about 45 cm of floss from the dispenser and cut it on the built-in cutter.
Wind most of it around your middle fingers, leaving a few centimetres between your thumbs and index fingers to work with.
Ease the floss between two teeth with a gentle back-and-forth motion, then curve it around the side of each tooth and slide it up and down.
Move to a clean section of floss for each gap.
Floss once a day, before or after brushing.

The earlier floss was a single strand with a vegetable wax coating in a white dispenser. This version is woven from more than 550 fibres that expand with saliva, has a white beeswax coating, and comes in a translucent green dispenser.

▸ What does expanding floss mean?
The strand is made of hundreds of fine woven fibres. When they meet saliva they spread apart, so the floss flattens and wraps around the side of each tooth rather than staying a thin, round thread.

▸ Is this floss vegan?
No. The coating is Cera Alba, which is white beeswax, so this floss is not suitable for vegans. Boka states that it is made without PFAS, and the mint flavour is infused into the fibres.

▸ Will it fit between tight teeth?
Boka made the strand a just-right thickness for narrow gaps, and the beeswax coating helps it glide. For a very tight gap, angle the floss and ease it in with a gentle back-and-forth motion rather than pushing straight down.

▸ Is it suitable for children?
Yes. Boka designed it to be easy to hold, control and cut for adults and children alike. Younger children usually need an adult to help with flossing until they can manage it on their own.

▸ How long does one dispenser last?
Each dispenser holds 27 yards, or 24.7 metres. At about 45 cm per session, that is roughly 55 uses, or close to two months for one person flossing once a day.
