Spiced star anise set against cool mint, packed in the silver and aqua 85ml tube of Marvis Anise Mint Toothpaste. Marvis calls the star anise intriguing and spicy, and that is a fair warning: this is not a mint with a hint of something else. Aniseed leads, and the mint arrives afterwards as a cool finish.

Strip away the anise and what remains is a fluoride toothpaste, made that way on purpose. Sodium fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. Hydrated silica and calcium carbonate are the cleaning powders. The foam is sodium lauryl sulfate, and the sweetness belongs to xylitol and sodium saccharin, while the current Marvis ingredient list declares menthol, spearmint leaf oil and peppermint oil for the mint side.

Marvis describes its toothpaste production as wholly Italian, and the brand has belonged to the Italian company Ludovico Martelli since 1997. The aqua label carries the portrait Marvis calls its Marquis, set in a scrolled frame near the cap, and the carton repeats the aqua panel on silver.
