Most mouthwash is water and alcohol with something useful dissolved into it. PÄRLA's dental team started from the other end — with the actives, and nothing added to carry them. What that leaves is a coin-sized tablet: chew for ten seconds and it breaks down against your own saliva into a full minute's rinse. Forty-five of them sit in a weighted glass jar, roughly where a litre of plastic used to be.

The formula reads like the inside of a good toothpaste rather than the inside of a bottle. Lactobacillus ferment — oral probiotics chosen to help maintain a balanced oral environment rather than scour it clean. Hydroxyapatite, the mineral your enamel is largely composed of, for everyday enamel care and the polished feel it leaves behind. Fluoride at a measured 225ppm, a rinse-appropriate level that complements your paste rather than competing with it. And bromelain and papain, enzymes drawn from pineapple and papaya, which loosen the marks a week of coffee, tea and red wine leaves behind.

There is no alcohol in it, and that is a formulation decision rather than an omission. Alcohol strips the mouth indiscriminately and leaves it dry — and dryness is precisely what turns fresh breath by mid-morning. In its place, a double mint of peppermint and arvensis oils: cold, sharp, clean, and gone before it becomes a flavour you have to tolerate.

Designed in the UK by PÄRLA's own dental team, and made without SLS, palm oil, gluten or anything of animal origin. How to use...

Pop one tablet in your mouth and chew for about 10 seconds, until it breaks down.
Swish for a full minute, working it between the teeth.
Spit out. Do not swallow, and no need to rinse with water afterwards.
Use after brushing, once or twice a day — morning, evening, or both.
No water required, so the jar works just as well in a gym bag or a desk drawer as it does in the bathroom.
