Our view

PVP is the whole difference here: the Whitening Mint formula plus one polymer, for anyone whose stains come mostly from tobacco or strong coffee. Without that, Whitening Mint is the simpler choice.

Pairs well with

Whitening Mint, with one ingredient added.

Diamond-patterned silver around a cool mint paste: Marvis Smokers Whitening Mint, in an 85ml tube that is faceted where Whitening Mint is plain. Marvis names the flavour cool mint, and the ingredient list backs that with menthol and peppermint oil. It is a straight mint, not a spiced or floral one.

Stains are handled by polishing, not bleaching: with regular brushing, calcium carbonate and hydrated silica polish the teeth and help lift surface stains from tobacco, coffee and tea, and the ingredient list carries no peroxide. PVP, a polymer, is the one entry Whitening Mint lacks; Marvis says this formula carries a special polymer aimed at tobacco and coffee stains. Sodium fluoride makes it a fluoride toothpaste. The sodium fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. Foam comes from sodium lauryl sulfate, and the sweeteners are xylitol and sodium saccharin.

Ludovico Martelli acquired Marvis in 1997, and Marvis says the paste is made in Italy, as all its toothpastes are. The carton repeats the diamond pattern, and both carry the oval cameo Marvis refers to as its Marquis.

Pick it over Whitening Mint when tobacco or strong coffee causes most of the staining. Otherwise the plain silver tube polishes the same way without PVP, and Classic Strong Mint suits anyone wanting mint without a whitening angle.

The Benefits.

  • One Added Polymer — PVP is the single entry on this ingredient list that Whitening Mint lacks; Marvis says the Smokers paste contains a special polymer for tobacco and coffee stains.
  • Polishing, Not Bleaching — the cleaning agents are calcium carbonate and hydrated silica, which help lift surface stains bit by bit with regular brushing; no peroxide is listed.
  • Sodium Fluoride — the tube is printed as a fluoride toothpaste, and sodium fluoride is the ingredient behind that label. Sodium fluoride helps prevent tooth decay.
  • Cool Mint Flavour — the flavour Marvis calls cool mint; its declared components run from menthol and peppermint oil to anethole, eugenol and orange peel oil.
  • Surfactant and Sweeteners — sodium lauryl sulfate, a long-established toothpaste surfactant, makes the foam; xylitol with sodium saccharin sweetens the paste.
  • Made in Italy, 85ml — made in Italy for Marvis, a Ludovico Martelli brand since 1997, in a diamond-patterned silver tube that sits inside a matching carton.

How to use...

Brush morning and night, two minutes each time, using a pea-sized amount. Spit, do not swallow. The carton prints the fluoride warnings and any age limit for children; read them before the first brush.

FAQ

▸ What is the difference between Marvis Smokers Whitening Mint and Whitening Mint?
One ingredient. On the published Marvis lists, the Smokers formula is the Whitening Mint formula plus PVP, a polymer, and Marvis says Smokers carries a special polymer for tobacco and coffee stains. Both share the same polishing agents, flavour components and sodium fluoride.

▸ Does Marvis Smokers Whitening Mint whiten teeth?
Only in the surface-stain sense. Its two polishing agents, calcium carbonate and hydrated silica, help lift stains sitting on the tooth surface with regular brushing. The colour of the tooth itself is untouched, and with no peroxide listed, nothing is bleached.

▸ Is it only a toothpaste for smokers?
No. The name points to tobacco, but the polishing works on surface stains in general, including those from coffee, tea and red wine. Coffee and tea drinkers who do not smoke can use it in exactly the same way.

▸ Does Marvis Smokers Whitening Mint contain fluoride?
It does: Fluoride Toothpaste runs along the tube, and the formula lists sodium fluoride. The sodium fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. Marvis websites give no ppm strength; read it from the carton. Anyone who prefers to avoid fluoride can browse the hydroxyapatite shelf instead.

▸ Is Marvis Smokers Whitening Mint SLS-free?
No. The foam in this paste is produced by sodium lauryl sulfate, which sits partway down the ingredient list. Shoppers who avoid SLS will find alternatives gathered in the SLS-free toothpaste collection.

▸ What does Smokers Whitening Mint taste like?
Cool mint is the brand's own description. Expect a plain mint rather than a spiced or floral one, with menthol and peppermint oil on the ingredient list and anethole, eugenol and orange peel oil declared too. For the peppermint Marvis calls intense, look at Classic Strong Mint.

▸ Can I use Marvis Smokers Whitening Mint every day?
Yes. It is a full fluoride toothpaste, so it takes the place of the everyday paste rather than sitting alongside it, used twice a day. Any change in surface stains comes gradually with regular brushing. Read the carton directions before starting.
