Every flavour oil left out: a mint-free toothpaste with hydroxyapatite, faintly sweet from xylitol and stevia and slightly salty from baking soda and potassium chloride.

No mint, no menthol, no essential oils. Davids Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste – Unflavoured is the Davids Hydroxi™ formula with every flavour oil left out: a flavourless, mint-free toothpaste on the same cleaning base as the rest of the range.

Flavourless is not quite tasteless. Xylitol and stevia leave a faint sweetness, and baking soda and potassium chloride add a slightly salty note. There is no cooling sensation at all, so it suits people who find mint too strong or regular toothpaste harsh.

The base is the one the flavoured tubes are built on: calcium carbonate and hydrated silica as fine abrasives, baking soda, birch-derived xylitol, coconut oil and hydroxyapatite, the mineral that makes up about 97% of tooth enamel. The abrasives help lift everyday surface stains, with no peroxide involved.

It is fluoride-free and SLS-free, vegan, made in the USA from domestic and imported materials, and packed in a white metal tube, 4 oz / 113 g.

calcium carbonate (limestone abrasive), vegetable glycerin, purified water, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), xylitol (birch derived), hydrated silica, (nano) hydroxyapatite, sodium cocoyl glutamate, carrageenan (seaweed derived), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, potassium chloride (potassium salt), stevia (leaf extract).
Does unflavoured mean it has no taste at all?

Not quite. There are no flavour oils, but the base still contains xylitol and stevia, which taste faintly sweet, plus baking soda and potassium chloride, which add a slightly salty note. Davids itself says the base ingredients can be tasted.
Is it mint-free?

Yes. The ingredient list has no peppermint, spearmint, menthol or any other essential oil, so there is no mint flavour and no cooling sensation. It suits people who find mint too strong, or who would rather not taste flavour oils at all.
How is it different from the flavoured Davids toothpastes?

It shares the Hydroxiâ„¢ base of calcium carbonate, hydrated silica, baking soda, xylitol and hydroxyapatite, with the flavour oils left out. The flavoured tubes add mint, cinnamon or fruit blends on top of that same base.
Is there fluoride or SLS in it?

Neither. It is a fluoride-free paste, and its foaming agent is sodium cocoyl glutamate rather than sodium lauryl sulfate. The formula has no artificial colours or preservatives.
Will it whiten my teeth?

It helps lift everyday surface stains. Calcium carbonate, hydrated silica and baking soda do the polishing, and there is no peroxide in the formula, so any brightening is gradual rather than dramatic.
Is it suitable for children?

Davids describes this tube as an adult toothpaste. For children, Davids makes Kids + Adults pastes such as Orange Vanilla and Strawberry Watermelon, both on this site. Ask your dentist how much toothpaste suits a young child.
