Our view

Perfumed rather than minty, by intent. For people who like rose in scent or sweets; when mint should do the talking, Classic Strong Mint or Aquatic Mint makes a better start.

Pairs well with

Rose leads; the mint stays in the background.

Pink roses, butterflies and the silver Marvis cameo on a 75ml tube, with a carton to match: this is Marvis Kissing Rose toothpaste, the rose paste of the Marvis Garden Collection. The flavour sets notes Marvis describes as Bulgarian rose against a fresh hint of mint. Mint plays the smaller part, so the impression is floral, closer to a scent than to a sharp peppermint.

Behind the flowers is a fluoride toothpaste, and deliberately so. Sodium fluoride is part of the formula, and it helps prevent tooth decay. For cleaning, hydrated silica teams up with calcium carbonate, sodium lauryl sulfate whips up the lather, and Marvis lists xylitol and sodium saccharin for sweetness. No rose oil is listed: the floral character comes from the flavour blend, which declares geraniol, citronellol and geranyl acetate, rose-type aroma compounds, beside menthol and peppermint oil.

Since 1997 Marvis has been part of the Ludovico Martelli company. The brand says it develops its aromas with fragrance houses and that its toothpaste production is 100% Italian, a perfumery link that suits a rose meant to read like a scent.

Rose is a particular taste. Anyone drawn to florals but unsure about rose can compare Sinuous Lily, Dreamy Osmanthus or Jasmin Mint in the Marvis range.

The Benefits.

  • Rose Over Fresh Mint — notes Marvis describes as Bulgarian rose lead the flavour, with menthol and peppermint oil adding a light, fresh mint behind them.
  • Rose-Type Aroma Compounds — no rose oil is declared; instead the ingredient list names geraniol, citronellol and geranyl acetate as part of the flavour blend.
  • Sodium Fluoride — the tube is printed fluoride toothpaste, and the formula is built that way on purpose. The sodium fluoride it carries helps prevent tooth decay.
  • Two-Part Cleaning Base — calcium carbonate with hydrated silica, in a paste Marvis describes as old-style and concentrated, with a compact texture.
  • Everyday Lather — foam comes from sodium lauryl sulfate, so it brushes up like a standard toothpaste; anyone steering clear of SLS should look elsewhere.
  • Xylitol And Saccharin — the sweetening pair on the ingredient list, sitting alongside the rose and mint components of the flavour blend.
  • Garden Collection Tube — a pink 75ml tube printed with roses, butterflies and the Marvis cameo, in a matching carton. Marvis says its toothpastes are produced in Italy.

How to use...

Morning and night, work a pea-sized amount over every tooth for two minutes, then spit the excess out rather than swallowing it. Check the carton for warnings and age guidance before first use, and keep the tube on a high shelf, away from young children.

FAQ

▸ What does Marvis Kissing Rose toothpaste taste like?
Mostly rose. Marvis describes the floral note as Bulgarian rose and pairs it with a fresh hint of mint, carried by menthol and peppermint oil. Expect a perfumed, floral brush rather than the cold bite of a classic peppermint paste.

▸ Is there real rose in Kissing Rose?
The rose is a flavour, not a botanical ingredient, and no rose oil appears on the ingredient list. The floral character comes from the flavour blend, which declares geraniol, citronellol and geranyl acetate, aroma compounds with a rose-type scent.

▸ Does Marvis Kissing Rose contain fluoride?
Yes. Fluoride toothpaste is printed on the tube itself. Its sodium fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. Anyone looking for a paste made without fluoride should browse the hydroxyapatite toothpastes instead.

▸ Is Kissing Rose SLS-free?
It is not. The lather in Kissing Rose comes from sodium lauryl sulfate, the conventional foaming agent. For a paste made without it, the SLS-free toothpaste collection is the place to browse.

▸ What is the Marvis Garden Collection?
It is the name printed on the Kissing Rose tube and carton. The Australian distributor groups Kissing Rose with Sinuous Lily and Dreamy Osmanthus under the same name, each of them a flower paired with mint.

▸ Which Marvis toothpaste should I choose if I like florals?
Choose Kissing Rose for rose. Sinuous Lily pairs a white lily bouquet with peppermint, Dreamy Osmanthus sets osmanthus against peppermint and spearmint, and Jasmin Mint tunes jasmine to mint. For a citrus floral, try Orange Blossom Bloom.

▸ How big is the Kissing Rose tube?
It holds 75ml, with a net weight of 4.0 oz printed on the carton. That is a little smaller than the 85ml tubes used for Marvis mints such as Classic Strong Mint and Whitening Mint.
