A deep teal 75ml tube strewn with orange blossoms and a russet bird holds Dreamy Osmanthus, the Marvis osmanthus toothpaste, which threads osmanthus flower through peppermint and sweet spearmint. Marvis likens it to a perfume for the mouth. By that description the flower takes the lead, and the two mints form the base beneath it.

The formula underneath is a fluoride one by choice: the tube reads fluoride toothpaste, and sodium fluoride is on the ingredient list. Sodium fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. Menthol, peppermint oil and spearmint leaf oil supply the declared mint, while the osmanthus arrives through the aroma blend rather than a plant extract. Calcium carbonate partners hydrated silica for cleaning, sodium lauryl sulfate brings up a lather, and xylitol and sodium saccharin take care of sweetness.

By its own account, Marvis came under the Ludovico Martelli company in 1997. The brand says its pastes are produced in Italy, with aromas developed alongside fragrance houses. For a flavour sold on scent, that counts. Garden Collection is printed beside the Marvis name, and the carton repeats the tube’s blossoms and bird.

How to use...

Osmanthus is a flowering plant, and Marvis built this flavour around the scent of its blossom. The flower is carried by the flavouring: the ingredient list declares an aroma blend rather than any osmanthus extract or oil, so read it as a note, not an ingredient.
