White lilies gathered into a bouquet over a base of peppermint, sealed in a 75ml teal tube patterned with a violet fish: Sinuous Lily, the Marvis lily toothpaste. Marvis pairs the lilies with peppermint, so the floral note arrives first and a cool mint edge follows. The ingredient list declares its flavour components one by one, from peppermint oil and menthol to hydroxycitronellal and hexyl cinnamal.

Under the florals is a conventional fluoride formula: the flavour is why it is stocked here, and the fluoride is there by design. Its fluoride source, sodium fluoride, helps prevent tooth decay. The rest divides into plain jobs: calcium carbonate and hydrated silica clean, sodium lauryl sulfate foams, xylitol and sodium saccharin sweeten, and titanium dioxide, a white pigment, colours the paste.

The cameo on the tube shows the character Marvis names as its Marquis. Ludovico Martelli has owned Marvis since 1997, and by the brand’s account every Marvis paste is made in Italy, rich and concentrated, in what it calls the old style.
